     BIO

Born, Santa Barbara, California, 1979
BA, Film + Video Production, Brooks Institute of Photography, Santa Barbara, CA, 2005.
Until recently, lived + worked in San Francisco, relocated August 2011 to Los Angeles, California.

Alanna photographs herself. Her images are cathartic responses to ideas, relationships and emotionally charged situations. Currently she is in the process of developing new work dealing with endurance and tension by performing for a motion picture camera. Her most recently completed photo series is Cringe, where she recreates moments of intense self-criticism, disgust and shame in intimate self-portraits. Everything I can do you can do better is an ongoing photo project (undertaken in lieu of going back to school for an MFA) where she recreates iconic and personally significant images of her art-heroes-- the likes of Bruce Nauman, David Bowie, Wolfgang Tillmans and Klaus Nomi.

Alanna often works in collaboration with Carolyn Radlo in both video and photography. As C + A Projects, the pair deal with social and political situations communicated through sparse text and evocative imagery. They like to work with words, images, and meaning without necessarily relying on narrative or linearity. Many of their projects focus on the exchange of ideas between them, the differences and similarities that show up in their work made side by side, but always guided and supported by chance. Their life-long, multi-faceted collaboration has, in recent years, evolved from mother-daughter to artist-artist.

The pair are excited to announce the completion of their newest video installation, ANFORTAS, completed in August 2012. Their video piece, Rice Relief will be exhibited in the traveling exhibition, Water, Water Everywhere: Paean to a Vanishing Resource at The Museums at Los Gatos, CA in August 2012, the Boedecker Theater and Naropa University in Boulder, CO in October 2012, University Art Gallery at The University of the South, Sewanee, TN, the El Paso Museum of Art in Summer 2014, the Alexey von Schlippe Gallery at the University of Connecticut-Avery Point in May 2015 and the Huntington Museum of Art in Summer 2015. Announcements of exhibitions, screenings and associated events will be posted on the news + updates blog as details become available.

Lost off the coast of Brazil since 2008, postcards from their Conversations collaboration can now be purchased online.

Alanna's other recent collaborations include creating the video elements for Seth Eisen's solo performance Blackbird, as well as an on-going video project with Heather Lucas, Films That My Mind Makes. In April 2012, Alanna began rehearsing with The People's Microphony Camerata, a project founded by Elana Mann and Juliana Snapper to explore the emergent phenomena of the People's Microphone and ideas of radical receptivity through sound, voice, and the body. The People's Microphony Camerata had their first public performance during RadioBreak at ForYourArt in Los Angeles, CA on April 22, 2012. The People's Microphony Songbook was published in July of 2012, and will be celebrated at The Last Bookstore on Sept. 14 with a live performance by the Camerata.

Alanna curates a monthly series screening the work of artists using the moving image called MIA at the Armory Center for the Arts in Pasadena, CA. For more information about the MIA series and the artists on view, please visit the website: http://MIAscreen.com
